Things We Do

Our three areas of focus are:

  • Grand Quarry Monitoring
  • Stewardship and Enjoyment
  • Supporting Horse Trail Riders

Our Story

In the early 1990s, community members around Damascus Lake began to organize due to concerns about the proposed Wilson Quarry adjacent to the Luther Marsh. We became an incorporated non-profit organization and under the name "Save Luther Marsh," formed an advocacy group that raised funds, conducted research, and hired experts to address environmental and social concerns about the quarry.

After 20 years of hard-fought opposition to the quarry and a significant revisioning of the quarry contract, the organization changed to one of monitoring and stewardship along with a name change to "Friends of Luther Marsh."

This archived article in the Wellington Advertiser describes the eventual settlement.

As well as continuing to monitor and liaise with the eventual quarry licensee, we also have a relationship with GRCA to allow horseback riding on the Damascus Lake trails. This additional focus is reflected in our new name: "The Damascus Lake Trail Association."
